How do I format or hard reset a N73?

We accept no responsibility for use of this code. It is undocumented, not supported by Nokia and should be used at your own risk.

The soft-format code for Series 60 phones is *#7370# . You enter this code as you would enter a phone number in the Phone application. It performs a format of the Internal drive - All data will be lost if you use this feature.

The method of performing a hard-format, i.e resetting it completely to factory defaults and removing all data, is as follows:

Switch off the phone.
Hold down the following three buttons: Green (call answer) button, * button, and '3' button
While holding these buttons, press the power button and switch on the phone
When the message 'Formatting' appears on the screen, release all of the buttons

Note that you shouldn't switch the phone off or remove the battery when performing either of these operations, and it's advised that the handset has a reasonable amount of battery charge before performing a format/reset.

General

When you start TaskMan you can see 3 main views: Open applications, Memory and Quick start. You can switch between them with left/right cursor keys or by selecting the needed view from 'View' menu.
Open applications view

Task list

This view shows the information about running applications. You can see what applications are running currently, switch to the needed application, get information about any running application, close some application or all applications at once. You may also see the amount of memory available at the end of the list.

This view substitutes the built-in task manager (if enabled in options) and task selecting navigation here is the same as in the built-in one. You can select an application by using joystick or just pressing Menu key several times to select the needed application and then long press Menu key to switch to the application.

You can also select in Settings not to substitute the built-in task manager but to define your custom taskman activation hotkey, in this case both Best TaskMan and the system task manager will work without conflicts at the same time (See Settings section in this documentaion for more information).

Hint: When this view is shown it automatically highlights the previously focused application so you can cycle between 2 last applications in a fast way.

Advanced configuration
You can select "Tasklist exceptions", and "'Close all' exceptions" from Settings menu in this this view:

* Tasklist exceptions - Allows to define a list of applications that should be hidden in Open applications view. It can be very comfortable to hide some applications running in background all the time and you switch to them very seldom. This option also applies to TaskSwitcher applications list (see TaskSwitcher section in this documentation for more information).
* 'Close all' exceptions - As 'Close all' command in Open applications view closes all non system applications you can set up here an additional list of applications that should not be closed with 'Close all' command.

Quick start view

This view allows you to increase the productivity usage of your smartphone. You can place here all most used applications and access them very fast when you need them.

You can add an application to this list using "Add application(s)" command. Also you may use "Move up" and "Move down" commands (or shift+up/down keys) to arrange the applications.

You can start an application directly from this view but there is also Quick start launcher - a unique and very fast way to start favourite applications. To use it you need to define a "Quick start hotkey" in system settings. Then the Quick start launcher window will appear after pressing the hotkey. From navigation and behavior point of view Quick start launcher is similar to TaskSwitcher (please see TaskSwitcher section below for more information) but there is favorites aplications list instead of running tasks list.

TaskMan's Task Switcher is an alternative way to cycle applications (that requires much less key presses to switch between applications). TaskSwitcher has the same look and feel as "Alt-Tab on Windows". You can configure your own TaskSwitcher hotkey in 'Settings'. Default hotkey for it is "Shift+Menu".

For example you can set up Shift+Menu button for this action. Then press Shift+Menu any time you work with your device, keep Shift button pressed and hit Menu as many times as needed to select some application. Release Shift button to switch to the selected application instantly. Absolutely the same as Alt-Tab works on Windows.

Hint: While you keep Shift pressed as in our example you can also use cursor keys to select the needed application and release Shift button to switch to the selected application.

One hand mode:

You can define any hotkey to use with TaskSwitcher. A hotkey consisting of Modifier (Shift,Fn,Ctrl) and other button could not be handy in certain situations, e.g. to use with one hand. So you can define TaskSwitcher key without any modifiers, e.g. to Dictaphone, Multimedia, Camera, etc key. If so TaskSwitcher will behave like the built-in one but with improved functionality.

For example you can set up Dictaphone key to be used as TaskSwitcher. Then press Dictaphone key any time you work with your device and TaskSwitcher will appear. Hit Dictaphone key as many times as needed to select some application. Or use cursor keys to do it. Now long press Dictaphone key (for 1 sec) in order to switch to the selected application (Also you can press Ok or Enter buttons to do it as well). So you can hit Dictaphone button several times only (and no other key) to switch to any needed application fast and with one hand only.

Note: 'Shift' button on most Series 60 devices is graphically marked as 'Pen' on device keyboard.

Advanced views

You can access views that show advanced information about your device from "Views \ Advanced" menu. There are Processes, All open apps, and Installed apps views:

* Processes - Shows all active processes. Allows to get information about them and terminate any 3rd party processes. Ending any system processes are not allowed. System processes are the ones that supplied and configured by the device vendor (in firmware).
* All open apps - Shows the view similar to Open applications view but it also shows all hidden applications
* Installed apps - Shows all installed applications on your device. Allows you to get various information about these apps as well.

Settings

Using application settings you can override the default application behavior and customise it to fit your needs.

* "Taskman activation" - If it is set to "Instead of built-in one" then Best Taskman will replace the built-in task manager when you long press Menu key. If it's set to 'Custom key' then both Best TaskMan and system taskman can work at the same time.
* "Activation hotkey" - Visible only when Taskman activation is set to 'Custom key'. It allows you to define a hotkey to pop up Best TaskMan from background.
* "Switcher hotkey" - Allows you to define hotkey to use with TaskSwitcher.
* "Quick start hotkey" - Allows you to define hotkey to use with Quick start launcher
* "Autostart Taskman" - if enabled TaskMan will be automatically started in background when system starts

One of the much vaunted features of Nokia’s Series 60 range of phones is the capability of personalising your handset with custom themes. Just as we’re now encouraged to ‘skin’ desktop applications such as WinAmp media player, so Nokia want us to develop a more personal attachment to our phones by choosing or even creating our own themes. Series 60 Theme Editor is Nokia’s own free tool for creating complete theme packages.

Theme Editor’s installation includes some atypical steps, so it’s important that you don’t rush through the installation. The most problematic step is selecting default editors for bitmaps, vectors and sound files. No guidance is given for this step, and no default editing programs were found on my test system. Without any assistance from the manual, this proved to be a major stumbling block in getting the program to function at all. I’d therefore recommend installing Adobe PhotoShop for Windows prior to attempting to install Theme Editor, as the install program should detect PhotoShop as a default bitmap and vector editor.

At the end of the installation, I was prompted to restart the computer now, or wait and do it myself later. I chose to wait, but the installer immediately started trying to close my computer down. I managed to stop it, but this was an annoying reminder of why you’re always warned to close all other applications before an installation: things can go wrong.

Once up and running, Theme Editor doesn’t really improve much. After a few minutes tinkering with the program’s interface, it becomes clear that this is not an application aimed at users with a basic to intermediate skill level. Creating themes is a time consuming, fiddly and perplexing chore – as is trying to find help in the program’s manual. This is a shame, because Theme Editor is graphically well designed and looks like it could be used to produce some stunning results, if only it weren’t aimed at developers only.

In all, Nokia Series 60 Theme Editor is a disappointingly complex tool really aimed only at developers.

N73 Zip Manager

I wouldn’t say it’s a must have app but it doesn’t mean that it’s not worth mentioning. If you use this feature you should download it because it works fine.

My opinion is that it’s easier to decompress a Zip file on your PC but if you receive or download this kind of files you should definitely have it.

On some sites they give you a few rows of explaining how to open files with Zip Manager. Well I’ll tell you how: press the ok key on your joystick. Simple as that.

If you have Zip Manager installed you can view the .zip files in your ActiveFile Manager.

3 Steps To Hide Personal Files On Your N73 Without Any Software

Hi all. Today I’ve found a way to hide the files on my phone. I bet all of you were thinking that the image and video viewer shows all your videos and images even though you wouldn’t want to show them to everyone.

The first thing I tried to do is to open ActiveFile and change the attribute of a particular folder or file but that wasn’t working. Th Image and Video viewer still showed the files I’ve hidden. So there has to be another way.

I know that the Image viewer doesn’t show the system icons and thing like those, so all I had to do is to look for those files and put my files there. I found out that isf you simply create a folder in E:/System/Name of the Folder, you can hide your media there.

Here are the steps:

Step 1:

Open any file manager software from your phone and open the following one of the following two folders:

C:\System\

E:\System\

Step 2:

Make a Folder for example ‘Images’. It should look like this:

C:\System\Images

E:\System\Images

Step 3:

Cut and paste whatever video or image you want to this folder, but don’t forget: Cut and not Copy. Whenever you want to view the images just open them with your file manager or copy them back to the initial folder.

MobiTubia - emTUBE doesn't work? Try this.

mTube used to be the only software that could help you play .flv files like the ones on Youtube but since MobiTubia appeared and emTube still says that their site is under construction…things have changed. I hope that emTube will wake up and come back into the picture again and since it is the first software of this kind ever made it would be a shame not to come back. I think they’re working on making youtube available again since it has changed the way it works now…

Until then try MobiTubia.

It is a nice application that allows you,to play .flv files and watch youtube videos wherever you are. If you are online you can watch videos and if you’re offline, you can watch your saved clips or any .flv file you want to watch.

Here’s a free application for your smartphone which enables you to completely scan all your data.

I’ve made a screenshot with all the options you have when you start the application:

As you can see you can check the boxes you need and leave the rest unchecked in order to make your search faster. At least that’s what some would say….:)

I say that if you have a 1 GB card you don’t need to uncheck anything because the search is incredibly fast.

There’s not much i can tell about this software because it doesn’t know much but it is very useful for those of you who have a lot of files and can use this software.

In these specifications it only says that the N73 can only view the documents (you know:exel, word etc.) so I thought it would be great if it would actually be able to edit these documents. After a few minutes of searching I found the following software: Office Suite

It’s much better then the Integrated document reader because it can not only read but edit your documents too. The only problem is that it’s not free so if you want to edit you have to pay

Handy Task Manager for N73

The built-in Task Manager for my N73 was not good enough so I tried to find something with more options. And I did.

The best task manager is Handy Task Manager because it shows your RAM, your Phone Memory and Your Memory Card memory. All these things are important especially the RAM because when you get out of RAM you can kill applications even if these won’t close by pressing ‘c’ and ‘yes’ like on the built-in one.

Whatever…here are some screenshots:

Some people say that it doesn’t show the RAM correctly but mine shows it exactly as it is because I double checked with Active File. Plus you have Favorites if you go left and you can add whatever you want in the Favorites.

This almost makes the menu useless:).

ActiveFile - A Must Have App For Your N73

I’m sure most of you already use a file manager on your Samrtphones. I think a smartphone is almost useless without a file manager, that’s why I tried a lot of the existing apps.

YBrowser: A very good file explorer. I respect Yucca for this app and for his Yucca Tools too. download here

FExplorer: This is a good explorer too and it’s on the market for a long time now (you will have to sign it though-see how) download here

The rest of the apps aren’t worth mentioning.

All these explorers are good but none of the apps has the 2 panes as the ActiveFile has, and the shortcuts are not that well used.

1. How to easily switch to Silent mode?
Just press the "#" key for a second . You can come back to the General mode with a new press on "#".

2. How to check the running applications on your S60 device?
Simply press the menu key for a second! You can move up and down to an application or close it with the "C" key.

3. How to spare space on the mobile's memory?
You can store your messages on the storage card this way:
Go to Messages Settings Other Memory in use and choose your storage card instead of Phone memory.

4. Some Symbian S60 secret codes:
Display your IMEI number by pressing *#06#
Display your firmware version by pressing *#0000#
Display your Bluetooth Address by pressing *#2820#

5. How to reset your S60 device? [WARNING - Use at your own risks !]
You can soft reset your device with the code *#7780# + security code (12345 if you didn't change it) so your device will be back to factory setttings. Your personal data will not be erased.
You can hard reset your device with the code *#7370# + security code (12345 if you didn't change it) so your device will be as the first day - all data are deleted because the phone is formatted!
If your phone is seriously crashed and won't boot, you can perform the same hard reset this way:
Make sure your battery is fully charged.
Backup your personal data to your computer or an MMC storage card.
Switch-off your Nokia N73.
Press and hold 3 keys; Green dial key, * Star key, no. 3 key on keypad and then press the power on/off to switch on the Nokia N73.
Remember, do not let go the 3 press and hold keys until you see the formatting screen.
After a few minutes when the process is over, your Nokia N73 will be back to the original delivered system.

Handy Shell is a powerful replacement of standard Active Standby. It allows you to carry out most common everyday operations quick and handy.

Today view allows you to get information about your phone settings, ongoing calendar events, incoming calls, sms, e-mails, weather forecast, and provides with application shortcuts with the help of different Plugins. There are 6 types of Plugins:

- Clock Plugin
- App Shortcucts Plugin
- Phone Indicators & Settings
- Calendar Plugin
- Weather Plugin (requires Handy Weather v.6 or higher to be installed).

All Plugins can be moved (along the screen), customized, activated/deactivated trough Settings view (Options > Settings > Plugins).

Start typing to invoke Dial or Start view. This view searches through available applications to start or contacts to dial. If no applications or contacts meet search criteria, it simultaneously suggests you to dial corresponding number.

Applications

Applications view allows you to launch quickly 12 (3*4) favorite applications. You can replace, move and delete corresponding Shortcuts trough Option > Shortcuts submenu.

Contacts

Contacts view allows you to work with (call, send SMS) 12 (3*4) favorite contacts. You can replace, move and delete corresponding Shortcuts trough Option > Shortcuts submenu.

Note:

If no Plugins are available after installation, please reboot your phone.

Weather Plugin can be installed only with Handy Weather v.6 or higher, which is not ready for BETA now. You’ll be able to use weather plugin after Handy Shell and Handy Weather v.6 are released.
